Books can be a good way to discuss bullying with young children.

 

Bullying in school and out of school is a serious problem. In extreme cases, it has caused children to commit suicide. If you notice bullying behavior in your child or your students, it's up to you to take action against it. By addressing the situation and offering ways for the child to behave more appropriately, you can prevent your child from hurting others. Parents and schoolteachers should work together to stop bullying behavior in children.

1. Stop bullying behavior as soon as you see it. It's important to address bullying behavior the moment that you notice it's happening. In some cases, the child may not remember the incident if you try to discuss it later. This means interrupting your child and bringing him away from the bullied child.

2. Give your child an appropriate punishment. In young children, a time-out is usually appropriate. She should sit out for as many minutes as she is old. If you catch your older child bullying, you may want to take away privileges such as watching TV, using the computer or playing video games.

3. Discuss why bullying is wrong. Use books or TV shows that show a child being bullied. Ask your child how he might feel if he was the one being bullied.

4. Role-play ways to stop bullying behavior. Your child may feel pressure if her friends are also bullies. Teach her ways that she can stand up to her friends to encourage them to stop bullying as well. For example, you might tell her to say something nice about someone whom a friend is taunting.

5. Monitor your child's Internet and texting activity. Bullying often occurs when parents aren't around. Knowing your child's Facebook password or reading through her sent text messages may seem like an invasion of privacy, but it's important to be sure that you child isn't on either the giving or receiving end of bullying.

6. Set a good example for your child. Adults can be bullies too. You can set a good example for your child by treating everyone with the same respect you want your child to show others.
